Pay-Per-Click (PPC) Advertising

Part 2 (Click here to return to part 1)

There are 2 additional features that really set Google apart from the competition:

  1. Unlike Yahoo Search you don't need your own website

  2. You are rewarded with higher positioning for writing focused, effective ads.

The second feature above works like this:

In PPC advertising you have what's called a CTR (click through rate). It is the ratio of the amount of times your ad was clicked to the amount of times it was viewed, scored as a percentage. For example, if your ad is clicked once every 100 views its CTR is 1%. If your ad has a good CTR compared to the other ads it competing with, Google will rank it higher (put it nearer the top of the list) even though it may mean having it above other ads that are paying more money per click.

In short you can pay less while ranking better.

The disadvantages of Google Adwords are that your ads are not shown on other search engines and the audience tends to be less net savvy then some of the smaller engines, which some people say makes them less responsive.

Personally I prefer Google Adwords.

The skill of PPC advertising cannot be adequately covered in a single article and its for that reason more than one book has been written about it but I can give you a few tips.

TIP 1: if you are promoting affiliate programs choose one that has a good sales page (does reading it make you want to buy?), does not have a prominent affiliate sign-up link (the people you send there will become an affiliate and buy from themselves) and gives a decent return relative to the price per click you are paying.

TIP 2: advertise affiliate programs that pay you for a lead. It is a lot easier to get a visitor to fill out a free, no obligation form then it is to get them to buy something.

TIP 3: always put the keywords you are using in the title of the ad. Especially important in Google Adwords because the keywords on the results page will be highlighted, drawing the surfers attention to your ad.

TIP 4: run at least 2 versions of each ad you write so that you can compare the results against each other as a test of which is more effective. Once there has been at least 30 views of each ad, compare the results and change one thing in the ad that had the worst performance. Then start the process over. This way you will continue to improve the pulling power of your ads. Changing even one word in your title can make a big difference.

TIP 5: if you are using Google Adwords be sure you read the guidelines before writing your ads, otherwise you could be like I was and have most of them disallowed.

TIP 6: keep your keywords tightly focused. For example, don't use the keyword "book" if you are selling a book on Internet marketing. It is far too general and you will have people interested in gardening, dogs, poetry and everything else clicking on your ad, you want targeted visitors not just any visitors.

TIP 7: keep your bids as low as possible. Some people say never bid more than 5 cents and this is another reason why you want to keep your keywords focused because usually the more specific they are the less competition there will be and therefore the cheaper they will be.

I have just covered the basics of PPC advertising.

There is a lot more to it and if you are prepared to put in the time to master PPC advertising, you can use it to create a significant income. But you will need to learn from an expert, not me.

The best known resource on this topic is Google Cash, a book written by Chris Carpenter. He makes well over 6 figures each year from PPC advertising and does a great job of explaining exactly how he does it. I read Google Cash and found it to be one of the few top shelf info products that teaches you everything from A to B about a topic, even providing step by step examples of some of his successful campaigns. A recommended read.

Most Popular PPC Networks

Yahoo Search - minimum 10 cents per click. Clicking this link will entitle you to $10 free advertising. Recommended
Google Adwords - minimum 1 cent per click. Recommended
Kanoodle.com - minimum 10 cents per click
7search.com - minimum 5 cents per click
FindWhat.com - minimum 5 cents per click

Good luck.
