The Technical Side Of Email Promotion Internet Marketing

Part 5 - How To Send Out Email To Your List Of Subscribers

In this article I refer to "list" a number of times. What I am referring to is a list of opt-in email addresses. Opt-in means the owners of the email addresses have given permission for you to send them email messages.

If you have a list then you need some way to mail them. You obviously don't want to mail 500 people individually (although I've read on forums about people doing just that). I personally have a list of about 5 million, even if I could individually send out a 1000 per day it would still take me almost 15 years to do one mailing! (If you want to know how I managed to grow a list of 5 million go to List Building. HINT: My largest list is a co-reg). Obviously, what we need is a way to mail everyone by clicking the "Send" button just once.

The good news is with the right software or online service it can be done.

You will usually need to contact your list/subscribers in 2 different ways. They are:

  1. Autorespond - Most often this is the way you make first contact and depending how you want to use your list it can be the only way you contact them. You do this with an autoresponder.

It works like this: you write an email series (called a follow-up series) for your list to read, then you load them into an autoresponder. When loading them you also determine when they will be delivered. For example, the first one will be delivered immediately, the 2nd 3 days later, the 3rd 1 week later and so. Then you either buy a list of email addresses and put them into the autoresponder or put a sign-up form (you know the ones that ask for your first name and email address) on your website which automatically loads each person that signs up into the autoresponder. That's basically it.

If you have ever signed up for something on the Internet and received a letter almost immediately after, it was an autoresponder that sent it.

  2. Broadcast - There will be times when you want to send your list a special message other than what is in the autoresponder follow-up series. Or if you have an ezine then you will probably be writing new stuff every week, which you send out when ready. In these cases you want to mail on demand or in emailing terms, send a broadcast message.

In case your wondering if this means you need to pay for 2 different things, don't worry because nearly all autoresponders allow you to broadcast as well. There are countless options.

These are my recommendations:

1. ProAutoResponder - This is the autoresponder service I use.
I have used others but was most satisfied with these guys for the following reasons:

  • Cheap at only $17.95/month (at time of writing)

  • Unlimited autoresponders in one account, meaning you can have as many follow-up email series as you want. Some other services charge additional fees for each extra autoresponder you require.

  • You can have as many letters in your follow-up email series as you need. Some services put a cap on 10, 7 or even as little as 5 per autoresponder.

  • You can send HTML emails if you like at no extra cost.

  • You can upload a list of names. Important because sometimes you may want to put purchased email addresses (leads) into your autoresponder. This is a very common way to promote your business and one I use regularly but you can't do it if your service won't accept uploaded addresses. I learnt this the hard way.

  • For a fee can send audio emails.

2. SiteBuildIt - The best all inclusive product on the market.
Once again SiteBuildIt! is on my list of recommended list of resources. If you know anything about SBI! than you're probably not surprised to hear it also includes, along with everything else, an autoresponder.

There are heaps of features:

  • SBI! is an online service that provides you with an interface to create your own attractive and professional web site and produce your own graphics with no prior experience

  • SBI! incorporates tools for search engine optimization

  • SBI! provides you with a linking service (very important for search engine rankings)

  • SBI! includes domain registration

  • SBI! includes web hosting of unlimited pages

  • SBI permits unlimited bandwidth

  • SBI includes unlimited autoresponders (a tool for sending email automatically when someone subscribes to your ezine, newsletter, tips etc)

TIP 1: Often when you are writing a new autoresponder message it takes a long time to get it just right. If you are writing directly into the "new message" field in the browser window of your autoresponder you session could expire, that is you are logged of automatically. The risk this creates is that when you click on "save message" the window defaults back to the login page and your message isn't saved. I know because its happened to me many times (sob). So, before you click on save highlight and copy your message.

Recommended Resource 4:

SiteBuildIt! - Perfect if you are just starting out
SBI! is a product of Ken Evoy's SiteSell empire. It is an all in one package and what some people say represents the future of web hosting. SiteBuildIt is an excellent tool (combination of many tools really) for beginners. There are heaps of features:

  • SBI! is an online service that provides you with an easy point and click interface for creating your own attractive and professional web site

  • SBI! includes brainstorming tools for choosing your theme and keywords

  • SBI! incorporates tools for search engine optimization

  • SBI! auto submits your web site to the search engines and tracks search engine spiders and provides ranking reports

  • SBI! includes domain registration

  • SBI! includes web hosting of unlimited pages

  • SBI!! permits unlimited bandwidth

  • SBI includes unlimited autoresponders (a tool for sending email automatically when someone subscribes to your ezine, newsletter, tips etc)

  • SBI! includes ad-campaign management

  • SBI! includes click through analysis

  • SBI! provides you with a linking service (very important for search engine rankings)

  1. Buy a fresh opted-in list that has already been built by a third party service. Be careful though because some unscrupulous dealers may sell them to you AND 100 other people. A very reputable dealer is CoRegistrationServices.com.

  2. The other option, which is more expensive, is to get a third party to subscribe people directly into your ezine or newsletter. When the subscriber opts-in it will actually be via a form that advertises your ezine. The best for this type of opt-in is LeadFactory.
