Part 6 - How To Capture Email Addresses

Hopefully you know by now the value in having your own mailing list. It can be a list you send periodical messages with tips and suggestions or it could be a follow-up series used to market a product or service. Whatever you use your mailing list for, unless you plan on buying it you will need some way to capture your web site visitors' email addresses.

There are 2 basic methods of getting someone into your email list:

1. The method you will see used the most is to have a form for your visitor to fill in, usually with their first name and email address. It's not as difficult as you may think since most autoresponder services provide them for you with easy instruction about how to set them up. This method is preferable because you can also capture the visitors first name (and other info if you like), which you can then use to personalize messages. The visual impact of the sign-up form can also help to capture visitors.

EXAMPLE (these examples will really subscribe you).

First Name
Email Address
Just like you, I despise SPAM! I will NEVER let anyone get their hands on your info - EVER!

NB. This form is simplified and still matches my old color scheme

2.
The other method you will see is "Send a blank email here to..." - you may have seen this phrase before. By sending a blank email to the email address of one of your autoresponders, the email address of the sender will automatically be added to your list (and you can send them an instant thank you letter if you so choose).

TIP 1: Using a popup or popunder with a subscribe form on it is a proven effective method of capturing emails. They are simple to do and there are plenty of free popup generators available on the Internet. You just type a little bit info into the generator, click a button and the popup generator will produce the popup code, which you then copy and paste into your web page. Simple.

You can download a popup generator for free from here or use an online one here

TIP 1a: This is an update to my tip above - Windows now comes with a built in popup blocker so if you are going to use a popup or popunder look for something that isn't blockable.

TIP 2: Another proven method of getting subscribers is to have your sign up page as someone else's success page. That is, when a new subscriber signs up to the other person's list they will automatically be taken to another web page which will contain your subscribe form with a recommendation. A large percentage of people will sign up to the second list as well. This arrangement is a joint venture and the other person is unlikely to do it unless there some benefit for them as well.

Recommended Resource 1: The late Cory Rudl made over $2,400,000 a year from email! He has been called a marketing genius and has written a book devoted entirely to email marketing. Just visiting the page he sells it from is a lesson in marketing. Read more...

Recommended Resource 2: ProAutoResponder is the autoresponder service I use and recommend to manage email campaigns. I don't recommend them anymore, a far superior provider is aWeber

Recommended Resource 3: Use EzineAnnouncer to save time submitting your articles and ezines.

Recommended Resource 4:

SiteBuildIt! - Perfect if you are just starting out
SBI! is a product of Ken Evoy's SiteSell empire. It is an all in one package and what some people say represents the future of web hosting. SiteBuildIt is an excellent tool (combination of many tools really) for beginners. There are heaps of features:

  • SBI! is an online service that provides you with an easy point and click interface for creating your own attractive and professional web site

  • SBI! includes brainstorming tools for choosing your theme and keywords

  • SBI! incorporates tools for search engine optimization

  • SBI! auto submits your web site to the search engines and tracks search engine spiders and provides ranking reports

  • SBI! includes domain registration

  • SBI! includes web hosting of unlimited pages

  • SBI!! permits unlimited bandwidth

  • SBI includes unlimited autoresponders (a tool for sending email automatically when someone subscribes to your ezine, newsletter, tips etc)

  • SBI! includes ad-campaign management

  • SBI! includes click through analysis

  • SBI! provides you with a linking service (very important for search engine rankings)

  1. Buy a fresh opted-in list that has already been built by a third party service. Be careful though because some unscrupulous dealers may sell them to you AND 100 other people. A very reputable dealer is CoRegistrationServices.com.

  2. The other option, which is more expensive, is to get a third party to subscribe people directly into your ezine or newsletter. When the subscriber opts-in it will actually be via a form that advertises your ezine. The best for this type of opt-in is LeadFactory.
