Email Marketing & SPAM

Part 7 - How Not To Be A Spammer

This is what you should know:

  • Do not send someone email unless they have opted-in (agreed to receive email).

  • They can opt-in (or make themselves open to receiving email from you) by
    1. subscribing via a subscription form
    2. requesting information
    3. sending email to you first (if you haven't opted-in to their list they may be spamming you)

  • Do not use deception in your subject line. You can use marketing techniques such as peaking the recipient's curiosity but an out and out misrepresentation is spam.

  • Always include in your email, directions on how the recipient can unsubscribe. Few things are more aggravating then not being able to unsubscribe and it could be just enough to motivate an individual to have you closed down.

  • Include a physical address in your email. I personally don't agree with this rule because their are too many nuts in this world to be sending out your address to thousands of people everyday (I've received death threats from opted-in subscribers!). Few people comply with this ruling but if you decide to its preferable to give a business address rather than a home address. There are some mailbox services that will receive your mail and allow you to use a physical address rather than a PO box number.

  • Do not include anything overly insulting or malicious in your email.

TIP 1: Use an autoresponder service that automatically includes an opt out link at the bottom of every email. I personally use ProAutoResponder.

TIP 2: If you are buying email addresses be sure you know how they were collected. Be suspicious if they come on a CD or the deal is emailing 20 million people for $200. In these cases they were probably "harvested illegally". (Usually, legally collected email addresses are sold at around 10,000 for $200)

TIP 3: Don't stray from the basic guidelines. It only takes one person to have you closed down and if you are mailing 10,000 people that one person represents only 0.01%!

Recommended Resource 1: Cory Rudl makes over $2,400,000 a year from email! He has been called a marketing genius and has written a book devoted entirely to email marketing. Just visiting the page he sells it from is a lesson in marketing. Read more...

Recommended Resource 2: ProAutoResponder is the autoresponder service I use and recommend to manage email campaigns.

Recommended Resource 3: Use EzineAnnouncer to save time submitting your articles and ezines.

Recommended Resource 4:

SiteBuildIt! - Perfect if you are just starting out
SBI! is a product of Ken Evoy's SiteSell empire. It is an all in one package and what some people say represents the future of web hosting. SiteBuildIt is an excellent tool (combination of many tools really) for beginners. There are heaps of features:

  • SBI! is an online service that provides you with an easy point and click interface for creating your own attractive and professional web site

  • SBI! includes brainstorming tools for choosing your theme and keywords

  • SBI! incorporates tools for search engine optimization

  • SBI! auto submits your web site to the search engines and tracks search engine spiders and provides ranking reports

  • SBI! includes domain registration

  • SBI! includes web hosting of unlimited pages

  • SBI!! permits unlimited bandwidth

  • SBI includes unlimited autoresponders (a tool for sending email automatically when someone subscribes to your ezine, newsletter, tips etc)

  • SBI! includes ad-campaign management

  • SBI! includes click through analysis

  • SBI! provides you with a linking service (very important for search engine rankings)

  1. Buy a fresh opted-in list that has already been built by a third party service. Be careful though because some unscrupulous dealers may sell them to you AND 100 other people. A very reputable dealer is CoRegistrationServices.com.

  2. The other option, which is more expensive, is to get a third party to subscribe people directly into your ezine or newsletter. When the subscriber opts-in it will actually be via a form that advertises your ezine. The best for this type of opt-in is LeadFactory.
