American Idol & Country Music?
Carrie Underwood
American Idol is not merely for wishful pop singers anymore. This past seasons finale -
which put rocker Bo Bice versus country crooner
Carrie Underwood - is substantial
proof that Americas Idol winner need not be the typical “pop music” singer.
More than 50 million devotees called or text messaged votes for Bo and Carrie in American Idol’s fourth
finale competition. Ultimately, the viewing audience could not resist the
earthy country crooner from Oklahoma. She had even experienced the praise of Simon
Cowell, the British judge known more for his harsh criticisms than his regards.
Throughout the contention, Cowell had incessantly said
American Idol was Carrie’s
game to lose. When she got the title of America’s Idol, Carrie guaranteed her viewers that she would
continue to sing in the musical genre that she truly loved - country
music.
In fact,
Carrie
Underwood has generally said that her entering in American Idol - rather
than the country competition
Nashville Star - was better for the viewers. "I think
it's really good for country music to have somebody advance as far as I have,
because maybe it opens some people's eyes that didn't like it before," she told
USA Today prior to American Idol’s finale.
Carrie - a 22-year-old college senior - beat out more than 100,000 original
participants and 22 semi-finalists to win
American Idol. Even American Idol’s unkindest critics have to concur that’s quite an accomplishment for anybody, but maybe an
even more momentous feat for a country and western artist. Her first single Inside Your Heaven,
broke in mid-June, sold 130,000 copies and went directly to the top of the
Billboard 100. Most of America cannot get enough of Carrie Underwood, but how about the
country music fans?
Despite her announcement of her dedication to country music, Carrie has not
really done as well as planned: the country music devotees response has been
lukewarm at best.
Inside Your Heaven may have been #1 on Billboard, but it
hardly made a nick on country music charts and has encountered little play on
country music radio stations.
Still, Carrie was asked to - and performed at - the 2005
Nashville. She’s
performed at the Grand Ole
Opry, has set up her own page on the
Country Music Network’s website, and she’s well on
the path to becoming a blossoming
country star.
After her American Idol triumph, Carrie signed a recording contract with Arista.
Inside Your Heaven was but a tiny preview of her future carreer - her first CD will
be released this fall. but, a recording contract is merely the beginning. Carrie has
also signed several moneymaking endorsement deals. She will be seen in ads for
Hershey’s candy and Sketchers footwear. Further, in an internet poll done by PETA,
readers called Carrie the sexiest vegetarian alive along with
Coldplay frontman
Chris Martin.
Currently, Carrie is on tour with the all runners-up of
American Idol -
performing and introducing country music to lovers in cities all over the United
States.
