Learning Spanish & Romance in Spain

You have done it. Tons of preparation, penny pinching, and perseverance have paid off and you are now touring and studying in a spanish speaking country. You are prepared to absorb the local culture and get all the excitement that being a guest in a foreign country can mean. Cities like Buenos Aires, Barcelona, and Quito are known for their romantic qualities. And 'same - just 'same - you may find some time for a little romance. After all, you are young, fit, and you date a good deal at home, right? So why not here?

Why not, indeed! Finding romance in a foreign place has its own special kind of charm. You are far from home, and you cannot wait to see the places and customs that are all so new to you. Finding that you are feeling amorous towards one of the natives can step-up your excitement and enthrallment toward the land much more than any art gallery or course! The chances to meet potential dates extend from inside a Spanish language school to a local coffee shop or resort, and even just any old street corner.

There is one nuisance, though. You have mastered merely enough of the Spanish language to Discover where your hotel is, (you get lost often), and say please and thank you. Other than that you use the common universal language for other things, such as bringing your hand repeatedly to your open mouth (where can I find food?), pretending to wash your hands (I need a bathroom), or waving (hello, goodbye).

You may be able to find a way to Ask this person who has caught your attention out on a date, but then what? How in the heavens are you meant to display to your date how glorious, worldly, and irresistible you are if all you can do is ask where the restaurant wash room is and wave adios to your date as you go there? All of the excitement of traveling abroad in Costa Rica or studying Spanish in beautiful Madrid can be consuming, and now you have to worry about not making a fool of yourself in front of this thrilling creature?

It may be a fine idea to plan for this eventuality (you being the young, healthy, magnetic, dateable student that you are, after all) before you even boarded the airplane. Gaining a little fundamental cognition of some dating words in your intended lovers Spanish language, whether you will study in Spain or live in Argentina, can go a long way in availing you over the rough spots while eating with the target of your affection. Learning some Spanish phrases and words can go a long way.

Tell your date that you are an international student, studying or volunteering in his/her wonderful homeland. A gorgeous Spanish woman is in all likelihood to be impressed that you are immersed in Spanish in Barcelona, and a sexy Argentinean man is likely to be impressed by an American gal studying in Buenos Aires. This might get you an insider tour of places known only by the locals, and will probably make your date more sympathetic. After all, you delight in his/her motherland enough to travel thousands of miles away from your family to study there!

Using universal signs, body language, and gestures can go far when you are trying to communicate with your date, but you may want to pay special attention to how people in his or her country motion when they talk. Rubbing your tummy to signal that you are savouring the lunch may imply to your date that you are pregnant. If you are a man, this could really cause some confusion. So observe, observe, and observe some more.
