How To Use Testing and Ad-Trackers In Your Internet Marketing Business

If you are serious about using testing in your Internet marketing business then you should be using an ad-tracker.

There are 2 types of ad-tracker:

  1. A CGI script you install on your server or
  2. An online service you subscribe to.

The purpose of an ad-tracker is to track the activities of your visitors. You can begin tracking them from the moment they click on your ad or the moment they enter your site.

There is also one online ad-tracker now, called ClickAlyzer, that also allows you to track the path of your visitors through your site and even after they leave your site. This is a very valuable breakthrough for anyone using affiliate programs, which is just about all of us. It's called ClickAlyzer.

Talking about testing with ad-trackers, their advantages, disadvantages, uses, alternative uses and benefits of ad-trackers and reviews of available ad-trackers adds up to more info than I can cover in one article. So I strongly recommend you read the same FREE ebook I did. Although it is free it is comprehensive and contains just about everything you need to know.

You can download it now by clicking Ad Tracking SuperTips

But I will say the basic principle is you run an ad or try something new on your website and then check to see how it affected your results (better or worse) in comparison to the pre-changes version. If the cjhanged version worked better than the pre-changes version you keep it, it performed worse you don't.

A way to accelerate this process is to run 2 versions and compete them against each other. Run a test (place your ads or bring visitors to your site) and track which of the 2 version performed better. Leave the winner as it is and make changes to the loser - repeat, repeat, repeat.

NOTE: both versions should be very similar, only one feature different. This way you will know why one performed better.

TIP: If you don't have the money to spend on an ad-trackers then you can do primitive testing and tracking with your web log files.

For example, imagine you want to check to see if a new traffic techniques is bringing more visitors. This is how you can do it.

  1. Log into the control panel of your web hosting account
  2. Open Web/FTP Stats (or equivalent)
  3. Open Webalyzer (or equivalent)
  4. You should be able to see some charts and tables containing visitor stats, click on the current month in the Summary By Month table.
  5. You should now be able to see a day by day breakdown of visitor stats for the month. Simply compare your visitors from before you implemented the new technique to after.
  6. Now you can go back to your website, tweak your new technique a little (run a new test) and then once you have had some visitors come through go back into your stats and see what happened (was the change positive/negative/neutral).
  7. Repeat from 6 until you are satisfied

Recommended Resource 1: if you are serious about testing then you need to use an ad-tracker. It is a CGI script (installed on your server) or online service that records the activities of your visitors. I personally use Adtrackz, a script you upload to your server. I prefer this type because you can use your own domain name in the URL and you can upload the same script to all of your sites.

Recommended Resource 2: . It's with using ad-trackers that things start getting a little more technical and a lot of beginners are scared off as a result (I was). I was lucky enough to stumble over a great FREE ebook about using ad-trackers and recommend you also read it. Find it here.
