It is possible to pay for a link
back to your site from somewhere else on the Internet. A paid listing
on a relevant site is useful for a couple of reasons:

If the link is on a page
that gets a lot of traffic then many of them will click through
the link to your website.

If search engines love the
site the link is on then it will have a positive effect on the
way search engines view your site. The result will be an increase
in your search engine rankings and all the good things that
come along with that.
The best place to have a paid
listing is in the Yahoo
Directory but it comes at a price. And that price is $299/year,
but if your site is commercial then the positive effects will more
than make up for the cost.
Paid listings don't have to be
in a directory, they could be as simple as a text link on a web
site. In these cases you can contact the webmaster and ask to exchange
links for free. If that doesn't work and you really want a link
you could offer to pay for it. Be sure any link you agree to pay
for is going to be on a busy page with a Google page rank higher
than your own and not tucked away in some dark corner.
TIP 1: It
is possible to bid to have your link placed on another site.

TIP 2: Getting your paid listing on a popular forum in your niche is a good way to increase your link score. Here's why -
- if the forum concerns your niche there will be a lot of pages rich with keywords relevant to your site, search engines will appreciate that
- if it is a very popular forum every page will probably have a high PR score
- the forum will be visited everyday by surfers fitting your customer profile
