Options of Web
Site
Builder Software
Most web sites are built with
just a handful of web site builders. Unless you are an experienced
webmaster I recommend you use a WYSIWYG type. What? Quite simply
a WYSIWYG stands for "What You See Is What You Get", which
means you can see what the website will look like as you are building
it. This is in contrast to a text editor where you write raw HTML
code, much more difficult and, today, really unnecessary. But most
WYSIWYG web site builder software now give you the option to write
in code if you want to anyway, best of both worlds.
The most popular WYSIWYG web
site builders are:
Composer
- Free
Composer is a free web site builder available from Netscape.
I have not used it and know little about it. The fact that it is
available from Netscape is a good sign since they would not lend
their name to an inferior product. Remember though that this is
a free product so it will not have the functionality or versatility
of the builders described below.
Microsoft Frontpage (FP) Web Site Builder -
Most popular
Everybody knows of FP, this site was created using FP. It is easy
to use once you get over the learning curve. A problem in the past
with FP was the code was bloated and full of white space, but along
with many other new features, the 2003 version has changed that.

FrontPageWorld for some more great info.
Macromedia Dreamweaver Web Site Builder
- Most versatile
Dreamweaver is also very popular but has a much higher
price tag than FP. It has all the functionality of FP plus more.
It is a little more difficult to use but if you are prepared to
make the effort and learn how, it is a very powerful tool that can
create beautiful web sites. SiteBuildIt!

| TIP
1: Whenever you buy new software it is a good idea
to check out ebay.com. If you qualify you could be eligible
for OEM software (OEM is software that although authentic
was manufactured by a different company). It is the real
deal but much cheaper. It is illegal and I'm not recommending
you do it, but you can often get the cheaper OEM software
from ebay.com without proving you qualify (to qualify
you need to be a student or teacher or so on).
TIP 2: Don't
build you site first and then try to optimize it for the
search engines later. A much better idea is to build it
with the search engines in mind from the start. Read SEO
