Why Use Web Site Testing
In Internet Marketing?

We all use testing to some degree in our lives.

For example, if you drive to work you most probably take the fastest route, but chances are it is not the only route and probably not the most obvious route. Then how is it you take the fastest route to work even though there are other more obvious ways to go?

Testing.

  1. You recorded the time taken to drive to work, probably as a memory;
  2. Tried a different road and again recorded the time taken;
  3. Compared it with the old route and decided if it was faster and
  4. Started over from step 2 until you had found the fastest route.

While you may have not gotten out your stop watch and laptop, it is still testing all the same.

Testing should be used to optimize your Internet marketing performance. If you aren't testing then you are leaving money on the table. It is no surprise that the most successful marketers are also the most fanatical testers.

Nearly every aspect of your business could be improved if you test and then implement the changes that you find to have a positive effect on performance. The following are particularly responsive to testing:

  • Sales pages - headings, font type, color and size, use of graphics, wording of links etc.
  • Order pages - wording of security guarantee, restatement of product and bonuses, different price tags and deadlines etc
  • Emails - subject line, greeting, day sent, wording of links etc.

Still not convinced? Read these quotes:

"Anyone can become a virtual marketing genius equivalent by doing one simple thing: testing and measuring responses".
Jay Abraham

"You can almost always tell the difference between an amateur and an expert marketer by the amount of testing they do. Testing ads and measuring your efforts with online trackers is the most important thing you can do for your website!"
Miguel Alvarez

"The key to success in advertising (maximum sales per dollar) lies in the perpetual testing of all the possible variables ... the most important word in the vocabulary of advertising is: TEST!"
David Ogilvy

"You can not succeed as a direct marketer unless you learn how to test and measure your results".
Ted Nicholas

Bottom line, you'll never be a competitive marketer if you are not testing.

Recommended Resource 1: testing is a mysterious Internet marketing activity and was the last piece of the puzzle that I got a handle on. While I checked web stats and my Commission Junction and Click Bank accounts to see if things I did worked or not, I was very unscientific. I didn't use keep records, I didn't make calculations, I didn't really know what to do. The resource that broke it open for me was Mark Joyner's "Confidential Internet Marketing Manuscript". Mark was a fanatical tester and reveals not only the implications of testing but also the results he was able to derive from thousands of tests conducted at his company.

Recommended Resource 2: if you are serious about testing then you need to use an ad-tracker. It is a CGI script (installed on your server) or online service that records the activities of your visitors. Currently ClickAlyzer is the only tracker that can track your visitors even after they have left your site. This kind of info is GOLD if you promote affiliate programs, which most of us do. Gold because you can now discover if the affiliate sites you are sending your visitors to are actually keeping their end of the bargain and making sales and more importantly paying you for them.

Recommended Resource 3: . It's with using ad-trackers that things start getting a little more technical and a lot of beginners are scared off as a result (I was). I was lucky enough to stumble over a great FREE ebook about using ad-trackers and recommend you also read it. Find it here.
